Francis Maria 2004 Scholarship Recipients

 

Four outstanding young men and women were the recipients of the 2004 Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese Francis Maria Scholarships.  Each Scholarship recipient received a scholarship in the amount of $2,500.  Scholarships were granted from funds given to the Archdiocese Scholarship fund by the Francis Maria Foundation for Justice and Peace.  Additional information on the donor and scholarship applications is available on the web at: www.antiochian.org/scholarships  or by writing to:  Francis Maria Scholarship, c/o Department of Youth Ministry,

1- Elaina Matook

      Elaina graduated High School with all As and A+s, she was Valedictorian of her Graduating Class.  Elaina has received Numerous High School Achievements and Awards.  She is currently a student at
Boston College as a sophomore.


      Elaina is a Member of her Parish Choir, served as a Church School Staff Member, a past member of her Bible Bowl team.  Elaina has served as Secretary of her Parish Teen SOYO, as Vice President and President of the New Region Teen SOYO.  Elaina is the past and current President of NAC teen SOYO.


      Elaina wrote in her scholarship essay: “My active participation in Church, specifically within teen SOYO, has aided me immensely in my personal and spiritual growth.  I have acquired or heightened innumerable leadership and organizational skills, and I continue to learn more and more about all that being a leader entails.”


      Elaina is member of St Mary Pawtucket Rhode Island and is the daughter of George and Sandra Matook of
Johnston Rode Island

 

2- Sarah Wolf

      Sarah graduated High School with a 3.9 GPA.  She was one of three Students Chosen to speak at her High School Graduation.  She has received numerous High School achievements and awards. She is attending the
University of
Nebraska at
Kearney as a freshman.

 

      Sarah is a past Oratorical Contestant and a Southwest Region winner in both the Junior and Senior Divisions.  She is a past Bible Bowl participant, a past Church School Teacher, a Choir Member in her Parish.  She has served as president of her parish Teen SOYO Group and numerous other Teen SOYO and Outreach activities

 

      Sarah wrote in her scholarship essay: “For the past four years, I have been our local teen SOYO president.  Our accomplishments during this time have been tremendous, as witnessed by our winning the “Most Improved SOYO Chapter Award” at the Regional parish Life Conference.  What is truly amazing is that we have done so much with only four members!  More important to me than any list of accomplishments however, is the growth I have experienced personally during this time.”
 

      Sarah is a member of St George Kearney Nebraska and is the daughter of John and Theodora Wolf of
Kearney Nebraska.


3 – Robyn Joyce Haas

      Robyn was a straight
“A” High School Student.  Robyn devoted much time to Church, Youth Group and Civic activities – receiving numerous awards and achievements in all of these areas.  Robyn is a Chanter, has served as a Church School Teacher, a leader and member of her Parish Teen SOYO.  She has served as the Southwest Teen SOYO Secretary and a member of the NAC Teen SOYO Youth Worker Committee, amongst many other Church and Youth Group activities and responsibilities.  Robyn is the oldest of six children.  She is attending
Washington University in
St Louis as a freshman.

 

      She wrote in her Scholarship essay: “My participation in Teen SOYO events has influenced me tremendously.  The event I remember best is serving lunch at a homeless shelter during an Orthodox Youth outreach project.  As we talked with the people there, many of them told us their plans for a better life.  The faith of these people was truly inspiring.”


      Robyn is a member of Holy Trinity Corpus Christi Texas and is the Daughter of Fr Mark and Rebecca Haas

 

 

4 - Nicholas P Abud

      Nicholas graduated High School with a 3.99 GPA and has received the Highest Possible Score on his Math AP Test amongst many other Outstanding Scores and Academic achievements.  Nicholas has participated in many High School activities in music, debate and volunteer services just to name a few.  He is attending the
University of
Michigan
as a freshman.

 

      Nicholas has served as an Altar Server, a Member of Teen SOYO and past parish Teen SOYO Secretary, a delegate to regional and NAC Teen SOYO meetings.  Nicholas is a twice past Bible Bowl participant, amongst many other Church and Youth Group Activities

 

      Nicholas wrote in his scholarship essay: “My background as an Orthodox Christian has shaped my values and my integrity, with the combination of leadership, scholarship, and good sense of character.


      Nicholas is a member of St George Flint Michigan and the son of Fr Joseph and Leslee Abud.
