Al-Kafaat Founder Honored by Archdiocese
The founder of the Al-Kafaat Foundation, Mr. Nadim Shwayri, with his wife Lily and daughter Myriam, visited His Eminence, Metropolitan PHILIP on Monday, May 24th for dinner. The Al-Kafaat Foundation in Lebanon provides services and housing for people with disabilities from all backgrounds; the word Al-Kafaat itself means "abilities." Mr, Shwayri has dedicated most of his life and finances to establishing the foundation that cares for these "least of my brethren" free of charge, from the cradle to the grave. The Antiochian Archdiocese is a supporter of Al-Kafaat and has been helping the foundation to raise funds for a new building to care for 250 children with special needs.
This past weekend a gala dinner was held in conjunction with the meetings of our Local Synod, Archdiocese Board of Trustees, and Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch, at the New York Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. The dinner, prepared by the famous Chef Ramzi (who happens to be the son of the founder, Nadim Shwayri) was attended by more than 400 people from throughout the Tri-State area and beyond. Master of Ceremonies Andrew Dalack guided the proceedings. Over $181,000 was raised toward the above mentioned project. At the same event, Metropolitan PHILIP presented Mr. Nadim Shwayri, a dedicated Orthodox Christian, with the Antonian Gold Medal for his humanitarian work. May God grant him and all the people of Al-Kafaat, many years!
