His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph writes:

"Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."

Beloved hierarchs, clergy and faithful laity of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America:

It is with a sorrowful heart, lightened only by confidence in the abundant mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, that I announce the passing of the Right Reverend Protosyngellos Paul Doyle. For almost 42 years, Fr. Paul has led an exemplary life as a priest of the Holy Orthodox Church, and, I dare say, one of the most profoundly humble men I have ever met.

Jesus saw Nathaniel coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathaniel said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathaniel answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." (John 1:47-51)

Like the Apostle Nathaniel, Fr. Paul was a man without guile. He was a servant of God above all else, who devoted his life to the Church and Her people. He never lost focus on his desire to minister to the Flock of Christ, even up until his final days.

And, he did so in a way that we now almost never see: Fr. Paul was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. His manners were exquisite, and manifested care he had for everyone he encountered. He showed respect to everyone, and treated every person with whom he dealt as if all people were Christ Himself.

Fr. Paul became my adviser and confidant during my early days as bishop for the Western Region, and this continued on up until now. Just as everyone else, I found in him a man I could trust with my life. Those who know him also know of what I speak. He was a man that simply did not have any guile in his heart.

When people were hurt, he was quick to try to heal them. When there was dissent and division, he rushed to mediate and bring agreement. He delighted in goodness and was a stranger to wickedness. There was never a scandal, nor can I ever recall even a cross word.

When he asked to retire, he didn't say 'no' to new assignments. In fact, he 'retired' four times, but always returned to ministry when asked. It was out of his sense of duty to God and obedience to the Church.

He was a faithful servant, and now he rests well with the Lord Whom he served.

I invite all the clergy and faithful to come to the services that will be offered now for his soul as he transitions to his rest in Jesus Christ. Please pray for him, knowing he will be praying for us.

Your Father in Christ,

+Joseph
