"Man of the Year" Award Presented to Dr. George J. Farha
On Tuesday, July 30, 2013, His Eminence Metropolitan Philip presented Dr. George J. Farha with the Antiochian Heritage Foundation’s 2013 “Man of the Year” award.
Born in Merj-Auon, Lebanon, Dr. Farha immigrated to the United States to pursue his baccalaureate degree at West Virginia University, and his doctorate of medicine degree at Tulane University Medical School. After graduating medical school, Dr. Farha came to Wichita where he met his wife Brenda. Since beginning practice in Wichita, he has always brought Christ into his practice by taking care of the patient first and treating all patients with the best care possible.
In 1964, Dr. Farha founded Wichita Surgical Specialists, P.A., the largest independent surgical group in the United States, and chaired the board until his retirement from surgical practice in 1998.
Dr. Farha has always had a strong love for the Church. He sat on the Board of Trustees of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America from 1989 to 2011, and is the former vice-chairman, a position he held for 12 years. While on the board, Dr. Farha made many trips with Metropolitan Philip to the Antiochian Patriarchate, helping with the development and implementation of self-rule.
In addition to the Board of Trustees, he has been active in many other facets of the Church: a lifetime member of the Order of St. Ignatius, board member of the International Orthodox Christian Charity and a strong supporter of his local parish of St. George Cathedral in Wichita, KS. As a healer of bodies, Dr. Farha knows the importance of good medicine and has chaired fundraising for the St. George Hospital of Beirut.
Dr. Farha and his wife Brenda life in Wichita, KS and have four children—Gayle, Joan, Laura, Julie—and six grandchildren.
