Dept. of Camping News
*Ncense, a vocal group composed of young men from the Antiochian Archdiocese, has recently released a new CD. Titled "Rising from the East," the new recording contains hymns from the Divine Liturgy for the feast of St. Raphael of Brooklyn. Proceeds from sales of the CD will go to benefit Orthodox camping programs. The project was sponsored by the Fellowship of St. John the Divine, and follows *Ncense's previous recording "Every Good and Perfect Gift."
The days are becoming chilly at the Village and the nights are downright cold. That can only mean one thing - Winter Camp must be around the corner. We have two sessions of Winter Camp planned for young people in grades 7 through 12 on the observances of Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (Jan. 15-18) and Presidents weekend (Feb. 12-15). There are two ways to register: online or mail-in paper forms. If you register online, you will need to download and mail the Medical and Snow-tubing forms. We are also accepting Winter Camp Staff applications. Our tentative theme for both sessions of Winter Camp is "The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make." Don't wait another day, register today! Check back soon for more details and visit our Winter Camp page for additional information.
On August 17-18, 2009, His Grace Bishop ALEXANDER visited Camp Transfiguration, which was held this year at a new location central to our diocese, at Camp Kenebec in Arden, Ontario. On Wednesday, August 19, His Grace celebrated the Divine Liturgy assisted by Fr. Joseph Purpura and Fr. Iskandar Younes. Other clergy from our Diocese that were present that day are Fr. Boulos Moussa, Fr. Gregory Murphy, Fr. Mark Arsenios Wyatt and of course Fr. Michael Shaheen who stayed at Camp Transfiguration throughout the whole duration of camp (August 16 to 22). Fr. Ghattas Hajjal also visited the camp later on Friday. Fr. Anthony Bahou from Dallas, Tx, made a surprise visit from Wednesday to Friday.
His Grace Bishop THOMAS passes on the following message:
Beloved of the Diocese of Charleston, Oakland, and the Mid-Atlantic:
May God bless you always.
This summer a record number of our children are spending time at the Antiochian Village Camp. I've been blessed to share some of this time with them at the Camp. I encourage you to go on the Camp website to view what has been happening this summer of 2009. In order to see the photos, go to the Camp website and see the Summer Memories section.
Yours in Christ,
Beloved Sayyidna Basil and my Brothers of DOWAMA:
Thank God, by your holy prayers we had a wonderful first session and are ready to welcome the second group of campers this afternoon. The weather has been perfect and the campers and staff have had an amazing time so far.
From Christian Ed. to Sports to Divine Services, it's very easy to see the Holy Spirit's presence in everything happening here.
It has also been very nice to worship in our newly renovated St Raphael Chapel. New sheet rock, paint, ceiling and air conditioning have all enhanced the chapel. This, as you know, was done through the generosity of the faithful of our Diocese. If there is any way any of you can journey up to CSR this week, it would be OUR delight to welcome you to camp.
Thank you all for the sustaining prayers you have offered and continue to offer, and for the campers and counselors your parishes have sent to us. They are our greatest joy. Please continue to keep us in your holy prayers.

Dear Brother in Christ,
Christ is in our midst!
This is just a last second reminder regarding camp scholarships through the generosity of the Order of St Ignatius. Each parish was mailed a form for awarding up to $700 in camping scholarships. The scholarships may be applied to any of our eight camps:
- Antiochian Village - Pennsylvania
- Camp St George - Iowa
- Camp St Nicholas - California
- Camp St Raphael - Oklahoma
- Camp St Thekla – South Carolina
- Camp Transfiguration - Canada
- St John Summer Camp - Alaska
- St Mary of Egypt Camp - Washington
The forms that were mailed to you in early January must be postmarked by March 1st and returned to our office. All of our camps are receiving numerous requests for additional scholarship assistance. We are unable to provide such assistance until we know what scholarship funds remain. It is for this reason we must insist that the St Ignatius Scholarship forms be returned this week. If you have a camper who has a particular need for additional scholarship assistance that your parish is unable to provide, please have them write to the camp director of the camp they wish to attend stating their specific circumstances and needs. To contact our camps, please follow the link to our website: http://www.antiochian.org/camps
If you have already sent in your scholarship form, I thank you for assisting us and more importantly taking care of your youth who so desperately need our attention and care.
May our Lord bless you with a fruitful Lenten journey to the empty tomb!
Yours brother in Christ,
