September 2009 Newsletter: The Dormition of Mary

Dear Friend of St. Athanasius Academy:

In August, the last month of the Church year, we honored the Dormition of Mary, the Mother of our Lord. In September, we start the new year by celebrating the great joy of the Birth of the Theotokos, the virgin and first-fruits foreshadowed in the Old Testament by type, the Prophets, and promise. She who would choose to become the God-bearer. She who is to hold in her own womb, the very One who gave her life – the uncontainable Creator of all. Therefore let us rejoice with awe, in the mystery and anticipation surrounding this new life and its hope of fulfillment. Truly, the Theotokos is our window of new Hope; the door and the ladder to our return to eternal Paradise. And it is her son Jesus, and our Christ and Savior, Who leads us as our Good Shepherd, on this straight and narrow path.

August 2009 Newsletter: Transfiguration and Dormition

Dear Friend of St. Athanasius Academy:

While on Mount Tabor, Jesus Christ shone forth from Himself, a most radiant white Light; a Light of glory so brilliant His disciples, Peter, James, and John, could not comprehend it. It is here that Moses, the giver of the Law, and Elijah the prophet, speak face to face with the Lord in His glory. Here Jesus shows Himself to be the God, not of the dead, but of the living. It is here the "I AM" manifests Himself to us. Here He reveals to us the true beauty of our human nature, created in His likeness and image, when we freely choose to be in union and communion with Him.

July 2009 Newsletter: Helping to Prepare the Heart to Receive His Word

Dear Friend of St. Athanasius Academy:

Friends of the Academy have been asking about our courses. Are they for priests and deacons? Do they have to be scholarly to grasp and understand the material? The answer to both is no. Our courses are written with the common man in mind; to bring anyone desiring to be nearer to the Lord, a straightforward way to deepen his love for Jesus Christ and His teachings.

June 2009 Newsletter: Pentecost - The Great Commission

Dear Friend of St. Athanasius Academy:

After the Lords Ascension, His eleven disciples returned to Jerusalem as instructed. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit indwelt and sealed within these eleven disciples of Christ, His gift. But what was this gift. Perhaps Ezekiel 36:26-28 – Orthodox Study Bible – gives us a clue: "I shall give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I shall take the heart of stone from your flesh, and give you a heart of flesh. I shall put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes and you will keep my judgements and do them."
